The Women's Place presents the 3rd annual virtual FORWARD symposium. This year’s theme, “Time for Change,” reframes our relationships to time, money, and power in the quest for gender equity and highlights ways that we can reclaim control of our careers, finances, and well-being.

The Women’s Place presented this panel addressing the impacts to the health, economic well-being, and freedoms of people throughout the nation and our local communities following the reversing of Roe v. Wade. Learn more about the resources currently available at Ohio State and in Central Ohio for sexual health, reproductive care, and family social services.

This symposium addresses the disruption of the pandemic on the economic and career advancement of women through encouraging resilience, community, and meaningful policy change. Selena Rezvani, columnist for NBC News Know Your Value, author, speaker and leadership consultant, was the keynote speaker.

Based on an illustrious career as a scholar, teacher, and administrator, Dr. Valerie Lee shares her wisdom about life and leadership in the academy. Drawing inspiration from the African American storytelling traditions she has spent decades studying and teaching, Lee approaches issues of race, gender, social justice, academic labor, and leadership with a voice that is clear, intimate, and humorous. Lee's journey will appeal to readers who are committed to making higher education more inclusive, while speaking more broadly to the experiences of professional women of color.

The Women’s Place (TWP) hosted a virtual conversation with Black Women Faculty and Professional Staff (BWFPS) observing Fibroid Awareness Month (FAM). FAM is dedicated to bringing attention to those living with fibroids, highlighting new innovations in research, and raising funds and awareness. Guest speaker Amber Bondurant-Sullivan, MD, a physician in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Wexner Medical Center, provided pertinent information about uterine fibroids and how to advocate for yourself as a patient. This session covers topics of menstrual health, period equity, and responding to complications with fertility.

Moderated by Dr. Andrea Williams, this session addresses the legal, economic, and historical implications of Black styles of self-presentation, including wearing natural hair. Whether at school or work, Black people often are penalized for wearing cultural hairstyles such as Afros, locs or braids. Biases against these styles can contribute to disparities in hiring, school discipline and suspension, health, and student participation in extracurricular activities. To prohibit hair discrimination, the Columbus City Council recently passed the CROWN ACT (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair). This symposium highlights how feminist advocacy and gender analysis can help address local and national problems of inequality and covers topics such as health policy, teaching and education, leadership, and women’s political participation. Rebecca Traister, author of Good and Mad: The Revolutionary Power of Women’s Anger, was the keynote speaker.

The Women’s Place and President and Provost’s Council on Women presented this panel focusing on working and the gendered impact of caregiving during the pandemic.
